Novice
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneNovice is not simply a beginner’s title but a combat rank in demon society, created when a Demon Lord gifts mana to a Demonkin. The gift makes its recipient a more capable fighter, but Malthios’s experience shows the pain, discipline, and danger bound up in that transformation. Novices serve as the fighting force between ordinary Demonkin and the Demon Lords who sponsor them, placing the rank at the center of the military hierarchy that drives the book’s demon conflicts.
Rank and Transformation
Demonkin occupy the lowest position in the described hierarchy, with little or no mana or magic, though they can serve as common soldiers. A Demonkin who receives mana from a Demon Lord becomes a Novice. Their magical potential varies, but their considerable physical prowess makes them especially suited to combat. The title therefore marks a change in both capacity and social function: a Novice is no longer merely a low-magic soldier, but a sponsored fighter shaped for the army.
The rank also sits below a further, more dangerous form of advancement. Demon Lords gain immense mana and wings after massive slaughter of innocents. The book distinguishes this known path from the ascent to Demon King, which only Demon Lords understand and which depends on the demon being worthy of the power. Novices are thus part of a hierarchy whose upper levels are reached through violence, while the greatest transformation remains obscure. Malthios’s later rise from Novice to Demon Lord makes that progression personally consequential, but the evidence does not present the gift of mana alone as a guarantee of advancement.
Malthios’s Recruitment
Malthios’s entry into the rank follows a childhood marked by abandonment and deprivation. His parents left him barely into his sixth year, and he survived in a demon village by stealing food. A Demon Lord eventually gathered the children who had survived his gift of mana and brought them to train as Novices. Malthios survived the gift administered by Fulton, though he remembered it as one of the most painful experiences of his life.
Training provided necessities that had been absent from his life on the streets: regular food and a bed each night. It was still harsh, particularly because higher-level Novices looked down on him. The rank offered shelter and a route into demon society, but neither erased the coercion and pain of his earlier life nor made him secure among his peers. His recollection of sneaking into the library during breaks to teach himself to read adds another dimension to his position: even after recruitment, he pursued knowledge outside the purpose for which the institution had gathered him. His frustration with the books ended when a demon girl of about his age offered to help him.
Military Function and Command
Novices are deployed as combatants in organized forces rather than kept as isolated trainees. After Malthios and the Pentagram became powerful, the group was placed in command of a large battalion made up of Demonkin and Novices. Malthios served as commander, with the others as his seconds. The force had successfully destroyed towns and cities and pushed farther into mortal territory than any before it. Novices were therefore not marginal recruits: they formed a substantial part of an army capable of sustained campaigns.
The rank’s battlefield role is visible in the battalion’s attack on a small town where the inhabitants, drawn from several races, resisted instead of fleeing. Demonkin and Novices fell to axes, short swords, arrows, and magic. As the mortals rallied, Malthios ordered a retreat toward a transport circle, with the troops given five minutes to reach it before they would be left behind. Torq sounded a horn; Aym opened the circle; Kamil prepared to direct her throwing knives with wind; and Foras and Torq stood ready to fight. The scene shows Novices operating within a larger formation whose survival depends on coordinated command and retreat, not merely on individual strength.
Destruction and Significance
The retreat collapsed when a blast of magical energy swept across the battlefield. Malthios and several members of the Pentagram braced themselves, but Aym was thrown into a tree and the transport circle vanished. Kamil caught herself after being knocked down; the other demons struggled to rise as the mortals advanced. Every Novice was killed in the blast, their bodies charred before dissolving into shadows. Malthios called for the survivors to leave and moved toward the injured Aym, while the fate of the rank’s fighting force was settled in a single attack.
That reversal gives the title its grim force. Mana makes Novices formidable and useful to the Demon Lords who sponsor them, but it does not protect them from a superior magical strike or from being committed to a campaign where retreat can fail. Malthios’s own life traces the rank’s unequal promise: recruitment brings food, shelter, training, and a place in an army, yet the same army sends its members into mass killing and lethal battles. The Novices’ destruction also marks the vulnerability of the military order they serve, while Malthios’s survival and eventual command expose the distance between the expendable ranks and the power concentrated above them.
